Judging beer isn’t about deciding whether you like it — it’s about breaking it into parts, describing each one, and scoring them against what the style is supposed to be. The BJCP scoresheet gives you the framework: taste in a fixed order, rate five categories, and total to 50. Do it a few times and you’ll taste more in every glass.
Taste in order: aroma → appearance → flavor → mouthfeel
The order isn’t arbitrary. Aroma and head retention are the most fragile things in the glass — they fade within a minute or two of pouring — so you capture them first and leave the impressions that hold steady for last. Follow the same sequence every time and your scores become comparable from beer to beer.
- 1Aroma first Swirl gently, then take short sniffs right at the rim before the beer warms and the volatiles blow off. Note malt (bready, caramel, roast), hops (citrus, pine, floral, herbal), fermentation character (fruity esters, spicy phenols), and any faults. This is your first and best read on aroma.
- 2Appearance Hold the glass to the light. Judge color, clarity (brilliant, hazy, cloudy), and the head — its color, size, texture, and how long it lasts. Head retention and lacing tell you about the grist and a clean ferment.
- 3Flavor Take a real mouthful and let it coat your whole palate. Track the arc: opening malt, mid-palate hop flavor, bitterness, finish, and aftertaste. Judge balance and whether the flavors match the style. This is worth the most points, so slow down here.
- 4Mouthfeel Now focus on texture, not taste: body (thin to full), carbonation (soft to sharp), warmth from alcohol, creaminess, and any astringency. Mouthfeel is easy to overlook because it rides along with flavor — name it deliberately.
- 5Overall impression Step back. Is it enjoyable? Is it true to style? Would you want a second glass? This is where you synthesize everything and, crucially, tell the brewer the single most useful thing they could change.
The 50-point scoresheet, category by category
Every BJCP beer scoresheet splits 50 points across the same five categories, and the weighting tells you where judges look hardest. Aroma and flavor together are worth 32 of the 50 — nearly two-thirds — because that’s where a beer mostly succeeds or fails. Appearance is worth the least, so a gorgeous pour can’t rescue a flawed beer.
Score each category on its own merits against the style, then total them — don’t pick a total first and back-fill. The Flavor box (20) rewards correct malt/hop/yeast character, balance, and finish. Overall Impression (10) is your holistic verdict and the one category that isn’t purely mechanical: a beer can be technically clean yet dull, or slightly flawed yet delicious, and this is where you say so. A full BJCP sheet also has checkboxes for stylistic accuracy, technical merit, and intangibles, plus tick-boxes for common descriptors and faults to speed up your notes.
What the total score actually means
A number without context is useless, so the BJCP maps score ranges to plain-language quality bands. Learn these so your scores land in the right neighborhood — the most common beginner mistake is compressing everything into the 30s.

Building a descriptor vocabulary
Scores are only as good as the words attached to them. “Nice” and “off” help nobody. Judges pull from a shared vocabulary so a brewer reading the sheet knows exactly what you meant. Anchor your descriptors to the four sources of beer flavor.
When you flag a beer as too bitter or too sweet, don’t trust your palate alone — the numbers can confirm it. Bitterness is measured in IBUs, and its balance against malt is the BU:GU ratio.
Spotting common off-flavors
Half of judging is diagnosis: naming a fault and, ideally, its likely cause so the brewer can fix it. A few off-flavors show up again and again. Learn their sensory signature and you’ll catch them instantly. (Some are style-appropriate in small amounts — context matters.)
Writing a scoresheet a brewer can use
A brewer learns nothing from a bare number. The comments are the gift. Aim for feedback that is specific, kind, and actionable — describe what you perceive, then point at the likely cause and a fix.
Watch for
- Scoring the total first, then splitting it across categories to match
- Vague notes ("good beer", "a bit off") that give the brewer nothing to act on
- Marking a style-appropriate character as a flaw — always score against the entered style
- Being cruel instead of clear — name the fault, but stay constructive
- Ignoring the checkboxes and skipping the descriptive comments entirely
The best sheets read like a short coaching note: “Lovely citrus hop aroma, clean ferment. Flavor is thinner than the style wants and finishes with a faint green-apple note (acetaldehyde) — try a longer conditioning time before packaging.” That one line tells the brewer what you tasted, what it’s called, and what to change.
Running a home tasting or club night
You don’t need a competition to use scoresheets. A structured tasting — at home or at a homebrew club — is the fastest way to sharpen your palate and get honest feedback on your own beer. A little setup keeps everyone scoring the same way.
- 1Print the sheets Grab the free official BJCP scoresheet PDFs from bjcp.org, or a simplified one-page scorecard for casual nights. Print a stack so every taster has the same form and everyone evaluates the same five categories.
- 2Pour small and blind Serve 1–2 oz samples in identical clean glasses, ideally poured out of sight so labels and reputation don’t bias scores. Number the glasses and keep the key hidden until scores are in.
- 3Control the order and the palate Taste light before dark, low-alcohol before high, subtle before aggressive. Provide water and plain crackers to reset between beers, and cap the flight at roughly 6–12 to beat palate fatigue.
- 4Score independently, then discuss Everyone fills their sheet in silence first — talking mid-taste anchors the group to the loudest opinion. Then compare notes, reconcile big gaps, and let the brewer hear the consensus.
- 5Hand the sheets to the brewer The written comments are the whole point. Collect every sheet and give it to whoever made the beer — a stack of specific notes is worth more than any single score.
