A homebrew kit bundles the gear you need to brew beer at home into a single purchase. Some kits target first-timers who want to boil malt extract on a stovetop. Others are full all-grain systems that handle mashing, sparging, and boiling in one electric vessel. The range between those two endpoints is wide, and picking the wrong category wastes money or adds frustration you did not sign up for.
This guide walks through each type of kit, what to look for inside the box, what is almost always missing, and how much you should expect to spend at each level.
Three categories of homebrew kits
Homebrew kits fall into three broad categories based on how much of the brewing process they cover. The category you pick determines how much control you have over the final beer and how much time and space brew day requires.
Most beginners do well starting with extract. The beer it produces is genuinely good, and the shorter brew day lets you focus on learning fermentation and sanitation before adding the complexity of mashing.
Extract kits: the simplest way to start
An extract kit removes the most time-consuming part of brewing. Instead of converting grain starch into sugar yourself, you use malt extract that has already been concentrated at a commercial facility. You dissolve it in water, boil it with hops, cool the wort, pitch yeast, and ferment.
Extract kits come in two sub-types. “Equipment-only” kits give you the hardware and let you pick any ingredient kit separately. “Complete” kits bundle one recipe’s worth of ingredients with the hardware. The equipment-only approach gives more flexibility because you can brew whatever style interests you first.
1-gallon starter kits: test the waters
If you are not sure homebrewing is for you, a 1-gallon kit lets you find out for about $40 to $60 with minimal commitment. These kits shrink everything down to a single gallon, which means you brew on the stovetop with a regular pot and ferment in a glass jug.
One-gallon kits are also a smart way to test experimental recipes. Even experienced brewers use them to trial new hop combinations or yeast strains before committing a full 5-gallon batch.
Partial mash kits: a step up in flavor
Partial mash sits between extract and all-grain. You steep 2 to 4 pounds of specialty grains (crystal malt, roasted barley, chocolate malt) in hot water to add flavor, color, and body. Then you add malt extract for the base fermentable sugar and continue with a normal boil.
- 1How a partial mash brew day works Heat 2 to 3 gallons of water to about 155F (68C). Steep your crushed specialty grains in a muslin bag for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove the grain bag, bring the liquid to a boil, stir in the malt extract, and proceed with hop additions exactly as you would with a pure extract batch.
- 2Equipment differences from extract The equipment is identical to an extract setup. You add a muslin or nylon grain bag (about $2 to $5) and a kitchen thermometer if your kit did not include one. No extra vessels, no mash tun, no additional hardware.
- 3Why it matters for flavor Steeping specialty grains gives you access to flavors that malt extract alone cannot produce. A stout brewed with steeped roasted barley and chocolate malt tastes richer and more complex than one made purely from dark extract. This is where recipes start to feel like yours rather than someone else's formula.
Most 5-gallon ingredient kits marketed as “partial mash” include a bag of specialty grains alongside a can or bag of malt extract. You do not need a separate equipment kit for this. Any standard extract equipment kit handles partial mash recipes with the addition of a grain bag.
All-grain starter setups
All-grain brewing means you mash crushed malted barley (and sometimes wheat, oats, or rye) in hot water to convert the grain’s starch into fermentable sugar. You then separate the sweet liquid (wort) from the spent grain, boil it with hops, and ferment as usual. This gives you full control over the recipe, but it adds equipment, time, and a learning curve.
All-in-one electric brewing systems
All-in-one electric systems combine the mash tun, boil kettle, and recirculation pump into a single stainless steel vessel with a built-in electric heating element. You plug it in, add water and grain, set your mash temperature, and the system holds it steady while recirculating wort through the grain bed. When the mash is done, you lift out the grain basket and the same vessel becomes your boil kettle.
These systems make the most sense if you know you want to brew all-grain and you value repeatability. They are not a beginner’s first purchase unless you are the type who researches a hobby thoroughly before starting. For most people, starting with an extract kit and upgrading to an electric system after 5 to 10 batches is a more gradual and less expensive path.

What to look for when comparing kits
Not all kits at the same price point include the same gear, and the differences matter more than you might think. Here is what to evaluate before buying.
What kits almost always leave out
Even well-stocked kits leave out several things you will need on brew day. Knowing this upfront prevents the scramble of realizing you are missing something mid-brew.
Watch for
- Bottles, caps, and a capper. No equipment kit includes these. Budget $15 to $30 for a capper and caps, and start collecting clean pry-off bottles from commercial beer well before your first batch.
- No-rinse sanitizer (Star San or equivalent). Some kits include a small packet of generic sanitizer, but most do not. A bottle of Star San costs about $10 and lasts dozens of batches. Do not skip this.
- An auto-siphon and transfer tubing. Many kits include tubing but not the auto-siphon that makes transfers clean and easy. Without one, you are trying to start a siphon by mouth, which introduces bacteria.
- A wort chiller. Not a requirement for extract brewing (you can use an ice bath), but once you move to full-volume boils, an immersion chiller ($30 to $50) saves time and reduces contamination risk.
- A kitchen scale for weighing hops and priming sugar. Any gram-accurate scale works. You probably have one already.
Realistic price ranges by category
What you spend depends on how much control you want and how long you plan to stick with the hobby. Here is a realistic breakdown across the main categories.
How to decide which kit to buy
The best kit is the one that matches where you are right now, not where you hope to be in a year. Buying an all-in-one electric system before you have brewed a single batch is like buying a racing bicycle before you know if you enjoy cycling.
- 1If you have never brewed before Start with a 1-gallon kit or a 5-gallon extract equipment kit. Brew 2 to 3 batches to learn sanitation, fermentation, and bottling. This costs $80 to $150 total and teaches you whether brewing fits your schedule and interests.
- 2If you have brewed extract and want more control Move to partial mash recipes with your existing gear (just add a grain bag) or invest in a brew-in-a-bag setup with a larger kettle. This costs $50 to $100 on top of what you have and opens up all-grain recipes without adding a separate mash vessel.
- 3If you are committed and want to brew all-grain regularly An all-in-one electric system is the most space-efficient and repeatable path. Compare models based on batch size, power requirements, and whether your brewing space can handle indoor steam. Budget $300 to $700 depending on brand and capacity.
- 4If you are already brewing and want to upgrade packaging A kegging setup replaces the tedious bottling step. A used Cornelius keg, a 5-pound CO2 tank, a regulator, and beer lines cost $150 to $300. This is often a bigger quality-of-life improvement than upgrading your brewing equipment.
Common kit-buying mistakes to avoid
A few patterns come up repeatedly when new brewers pick their first kit. Avoiding these saves money and frustration.
Watch for
- Buying a kit with a glass carboy as the primary fermenter. Glass is heavy, slippery when wet, and dangerous if dropped. A plastic bucket or PET carboy is safer, lighter, and easier to clean for your first batches.
- Choosing a kit based on how many pieces it advertises. A "50-piece kit" that includes every hose clamp and washer is not better than a 15-piece kit with higher-quality core items. Count the things that matter: fermenter, airlock, hydrometer, bottling setup.
- Skipping the hydrometer because the kit did not include one. Without gravity readings, you cannot confirm fermentation is finished or calculate your ABV. It is a $10 tool that prevents both bottle bombs and mystery beer.
- Ordering a kit without checking the fermenter size against your batch size. A 5-gallon fermenter is too small for a 5-gallon batch because there is no room for krausen. You need at least 6 gallons of fermenter capacity for a 5-gallon batch.
- Spending $500 or more before brewing your first batch. You do not yet know if you prefer ales or lagers, 5-gallon batches or 2.5-gallon batches, bottling or kegging. Start small, learn your preferences, then invest.
Ingredient kits vs. equipment kits: know the difference
This distinction trips up more first-time buyers than any other. The terms sound similar, but they cover completely different purchases.
Once you have equipment, your per-batch cost drops to $30 to $50 for ingredients. That works out to roughly $0.60 to $1.00 per bottle for a 5-gallon batch, which is a fraction of what craft beer costs at the store.
The natural upgrade path
Most homebrewers follow a predictable progression. Knowing the path helps you avoid buying gear you will replace in six months.
You do not have to follow this exact sequence. Some brewers stay happily with extract for years. Others jump straight to all-grain because the process appeals to them. The point is that each level builds on the one before it, and very little of the gear from earlier stages goes to waste.
