The good news about making mead is that it needs surprisingly little gear — and most of it you buy once and reuse for years. If you already own winemaking equipment you’re basically ready; if not, a modest starter kit plus honey and yeast will get your first gallon going. Here’s exactly what you need, what each piece does, and what’s worth adding later.

The essential equipment

These are the non-negotiables for a first batch. Everything here is reusable batch after batch:

Fermenter + airlock A food-grade carboy or bucket where fermentation happens, sealed with an airlock and bung that lets CO₂ escape while keeping air and contaminants out. Start with 1 gallon.
Hydrometer Measures the sugar/density of your liquid so you can track fermentation and calculate ABV from original and final gravity. The one measuring tool you truly need.
Auto-siphon Lets you rack (transfer) the mead off its sediment cleanly, without sucking on tubing or stirring up the lees. Makes racking and bottling far easier.
No-rinse sanitiser Used on every piece of equipment that touches the mead. The single most important item for avoiding spoiled batches.

Ingredients you'll need

Alongside the hardware, three consumables make the mead itself:

Honey the fermentable — roughly 2.5–3 lb per gallon for standard strength; mild varietals are easiest young.
Wine yeast Lalvin D47 or 71B are the beginner favourites; both tolerate 14%+ ABV and make a clean mead.
Yeast nutrient Fermaid-O / Fermaid-K or similar; honey lacks nitrogen, so nutrients prevent stalled, smelly ferments.

Bottling equipment

Once fermentation and aging are done, you’ll need a way to package the mead:

Bottles Standard 750 ml wine bottles for still mead; pressure-rated Champagne or beer bottles for sparkling. Swing-top bottles are reusable and convenient.
Corker or capper A corker for wine bottles or a capper for beer bottles, depending on what you're filling. Swing-tops need neither.
Bottling wand A spring-tipped wand attached to your siphon fills bottles cleanly to a consistent level with minimal mess and oxygen pickup.

Nice-to-have upgrades

None of these are needed for batch one, but they make life easier as you get more serious:

Refractometer quick single-drop gravity readings before fermentation; pairs well with a hydrometer.
Larger carboy (5–6 gal) once you know you enjoy it, bigger batches make better use of your time.
Second vessel for racking makes bulk aging and clearing much simpler.
Temperature control a stable, cool spot or a heat/cool source keeps fermentation and aging in the ideal range.

Beginner shopping list

Here’s the complete list for a first 1-gallon batch, start to bottle:

  1. 1
1-gallon carboy + airlock & bung Your fermentation vessel. Often sold together as a starter kit.
  2. 2
Hydrometer To measure OG and FG and calculate ABV.
  3. 3
Auto-siphon + tubing For racking off sediment and bottling.
  4. 4
No-rinse sanitiser Star San or similar — use on everything.
  5. 5
Honey, wine yeast, yeast nutrient The ingredients; buy honey to match your target gravity.
  6. 6
Bottles + corker/capper To package the finished mead. Reuse them going forward.

Where to buy mead equipment

You have three good options. Homebrew shops — local or online — carry everything and can advise on kit; a 1-gallon starter kit is usually the cheapest way to get the core hardware in one purchase. Amazon and general retailers stock all the individual pieces plus yeast and nutrients, handy for topping up or replacing single items. Local winemaking suppliers are great for honey in bulk and for talking through your first batch.

Whichever route you choose, buy the equipment once and it pays for itself over many batches — the only thing you repurchase each time is honey, yeast, and nutrient.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need to start making mead?
The essentials are a fermentation vessel (a 1-gallon carboy or fermenting bucket) with an airlock and bung, a hydrometer, an auto-siphon for racking, and bottles. For ingredients you need honey, wine yeast, and yeast nutrient. A no-rinse sanitiser ties it all together — clean gear matters more than expensive gear.
Do I need special equipment for mead versus wine or beer?
No — mead uses the same core equipment as winemaking. If you already have wine or cider gear (carboy, airlock, hydrometer, siphon, bottles), you can make mead with it. The only mead-specific 'equipment' is really the ingredients: honey instead of grapes or malt, plus nutrients since honey is nutrient-poor.
How much does mead-making equipment cost to start?
A basic 1-gallon starter setup — carboy, airlock, hydrometer, siphon, and sanitiser — is quite affordable, often bought as a kit. Ingredients (honey, yeast, nutrient) are separate and the honey is usually the biggest cost. You can reuse all the equipment batch after batch, so the per-batch cost drops quickly.
What size fermenter should I start with?
A 1-gallon carboy is ideal for a first batch — small enough to be low-risk and cheap on honey, big enough to be worth the effort. Once you know you enjoy it, scale up to a 5- or 6-gallon carboy or bucket. Always leave headspace for foam during active fermentation.
Is a hydrometer or refractometer better for mead?
A hydrometer is the essential, budget-friendly choice and works throughout the whole process, including after alcohol is present. A refractometer is handy for quick, single-drop readings before fermentation but needs a correction formula once alcohol is present. Most meadmakers start with a hydrometer and add a refractometer later if they want convenience.
Where can I buy mead making equipment?
Homebrew shops (local and online) carry everything, often as starter kits, and Amazon stocks all the individual pieces — carboys, airlocks, hydrometers, siphons, yeast, and nutrients. Buying a 1-gallon starter kit is usually the cheapest way to get the core gear in one go, then add honey and yeast separately.
Do I really need a sanitiser?
Yes — it's the most important item on the list. Wild bacteria and yeast can spoil a batch, and honey's long fermentation and aging give contamination plenty of time to take hold. A no-rinse sanitiser like Star San used on every piece of equipment that touches the mead is cheap insurance against a ruined batch.
