How to use this mead priming sugar calculator

Enter your batch volume, the temperature the mead will be at when you bottle, and your target carbonation in volumes of CO2. The calculator returns the grams of dextrose and the grams of table sugar needed to reach that target.

It also shows the residual CO2 already dissolved in the mead and the additional CO2 your priming sugar needs to create. Dissolve the sugar in a little boiled water, mix it gently into the whole batch, then bottle.

Why bottling temperature matters

Mead always holds some dissolved CO2 left over from fermentation, and how much it holds depends on temperature. Cold mead retains more CO2; warm mead retains less. That residual amount counts toward your carbonation target, so the calculator subtracts it before working out how much sugar to add.

This is why the same target carbonation needs more priming sugar for warm mead than for cold mead. Enter the actual temperature at bottling time — not fridge temperature if the mead has warmed up — for an accurate result.

Dextrose vs table sugar

Both dextrose (corn sugar) and table sugar (sucrose) carbonate mead reliably. The difference is potency by weight: sucrose is slightly more fermentable, so you need a little less of it than dextrose for the same carbonation. The calculator gives both figures so you can use whichever you have on hand.

Neither choice meaningfully changes flavour at priming quantities, since the yeast consumes the sugar entirely and turns it into CO2. Pick based on availability and measure by weight, not volume, for accuracy.

Bottling safely

Only bottle-condition mead that has reached a stable final gravity — confirm it with repeat hydrometer readings a few days apart. Priming a mead that is still fermenting stacks new pressure on top of unfinished fermentation and risks over-carbonation or burst bottles.

Match the bottle to the carbonation level. Above roughly 2.5 volumes, use pressure-rated bottles such as Champagne bottles or heavy beer bottles with proper closures. Store carbonating bottles somewhere contained and out of the way while they condition.

Can I bottle condition still mead safely?

Only if gravity is stable and fermentation is complete before priming. Bottling a mead that is still fermenting adds uncontrolled pressure and can cause bottle bombs.

Why does bottling temperature matter?

Temperature changes how much CO2 stays dissolved in the mead. Warmer mead holds less residual CO2, so it needs more priming sugar to reach the same target carbonation.

Dextrose vs table sugar?

Both work for priming. Table sugar (sucrose) is slightly more fermentable by weight, so you need a little less of it than dextrose (corn sugar) for the same carbonation.

What carbonation level suits mead?

Many sparkling meads target roughly 2.0 to 2.8 volumes of CO2 depending on style. Lighter, petillant meads sit lower; fully sparkling meads sit toward the top.

Do I need pressure-rated bottles?

For anything above about 2.5 volumes, use bottles rated for pressure — Champagne bottles or heavy beer bottles with proper caps or corks and cages. Standard wine bottles are not safe for high carbonation.

How long does bottle conditioning take?

Most meads carbonate in the bottle over two to four weeks at room temperature, then benefit from a cold-conditioning period before serving. Timing depends on temperature and yeast health.
