Frozen yogurt is exactly what it sounds like: cultured yogurt, sweetened and frozen into a scoopable dessert. It sits next to ice cream on the health-food shelf, but the two aren’t the same thing, and not all frozen yogurt is created equal.

What frozen yogurt actually is

Frozen yogurt (often shortened to “fro-yo”) is made by taking cultured dairy yogurt, sweetening it, and freezing it while churning to keep the texture smooth rather than icy. Shop versions usually run through a soft-serve machine, while homemade batches use an ice cream maker or a stir-and-freeze method.

Because it starts from yogurt rather than cream, frozen yogurt naturally has a tangier flavor and a lighter body than traditional ice cream, though many recipes and shop mixes blend in milk or cream to soften that tang.

Frozen yogurt vs. ice cream

Fat content frozen yogurt is generally lower in fat than ice cream, since it starts from yogurt instead of cream.
Sugar content often comparable to ice cream — not automatically the lower-sugar choice.
Flavor tangier and lighter-tasting thanks to the cultured yogurt base.
Toppings self-serve shops make it easy to add far more calories at the topping bar than in the base serving.

Frozen yogurt nutrition

Nutrition varies by brand and fat level, but a useful baseline for a half-cup (about 100g) serving:

110–130 calories per half-cup serving
0–4g fat, depending on regular vs. nonfat
~4g protein per serving, from the yogurt base

Toppings, sauces, and larger self-serve portions can push the total well past these numbers, so the base serving size matters more than the “frozen yogurt” label itself.

Does it still have probiotics?

This is the most common myth around frozen yogurt: freezing doesn’t automatically kill live cultures, but the churning, storage, and processing many commercial products go through often reduces active culture counts significantly, and some shop mixes are only lightly cultured to start with.

Homemade, from real yogurt keeps more live culture, especially if you skip reheating the base before freezing.
Shop soft-serve fro-yo treat the probiotic claim skeptically unless the brand states live-culture counts.
Look for the seal products carrying a "Live & Active Cultures" seal have met a minimum culture count at the time of manufacture.

How to make simple frozen yogurt at home

  1. 1
Start with a firm base Use a well-set, thick plain or Greek yogurt. A firmer starting yogurt gives a creamier frozen texture than a thin one.
  2. 2
Sweeten to taste Stir in sugar, honey, or another sweetener until it tastes slightly sweeter than you want the final dessert, since freezing mutes sweetness.
  3. 3
Add fruit or flavoring (optional) Blend in fruit puree, vanilla, or cocoa before freezing for extra flavor.
  4. 4
Churn or stir-freeze Churn in an ice cream maker following its instructions, or freeze in a shallow pan and stir every 30 minutes until smooth and scoopable.
  5. 5
Firm up before serving Transfer to a container and freeze another hour or two for a firmer scoop.

Keep exploring cultured dairy

For the base yogurt that makes the best frozen yogurt, start with the Greek yogurt guide for a thick, straining-ready set, or compare kefir vs. yogurt if you’re curious how a thinner, drinkable ferment stacks up nutritionally.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is frozen yogurt made of?
Frozen yogurt starts with cultured dairy yogurt, then gets sweetened, sometimes blended with milk or cream for texture, and churned while freezing, the same way ice cream is made. Shop and shop-style versions often add stabilizers and flavorings on top of that base.
Is frozen yogurt healthier than ice cream?
It can be, but it depends on the product. Frozen yogurt is usually lower in fat than ice cream because it's built on yogurt rather than cream, but many versions are just as high in added sugar, so it isn't automatically the lighter choice. Check the label rather than assuming.
Does frozen yogurt have live probiotics?
Not always. Freezing and the churning process can reduce or kill the live cultures that made the yogurt in the first place, and many self-serve shop machines use a mix that's only lightly cultured to begin with. If probiotics matter to you, homemade frozen yogurt from a well-cultured, unheated base keeps more of them intact.
How many calories are in frozen yogurt?
A typical half-cup (about 100g) serving of regular frozen yogurt runs around 110–130 calories, with nonfat versions coming in a bit lower. Toppings at self-serve shops can add considerably more, so the base serving and the topping bar are two separate calorie decisions.
Can I make frozen yogurt at home?
Yes. Start with a thick, well-set plain or Greek yogurt, sweeten it to taste, then churn it in an ice cream maker or freeze it in a shallow pan and stir every 30 minutes until smooth and scoopable. A firmer base yogurt gives a creamier result than a thin one.
Why is my homemade frozen yogurt icy instead of creamy?
Icy texture usually means too much water and not enough fat or sugar, both of which help control ice crystal size. Straining the yogurt first (as for Greek yogurt), adding a little extra sweetener, or blending in some cream can noticeably smooth out the final texture.
