Where mead calories come from
Two sources drive mead calories: alcohol and residual sugar. Ethanol contributes roughly 7 kcal per gram, and sugar contributes about 4 kcal per gram. Because ethanol is more energy-dense and mead is typically 10 to 14% ABV, alcohol is usually the larger share of total calories.
Residual sugar becomes significant in sweet and dessert meads. A sack mead that finishes both high in ABV and high in residual sugar stacks both calorie sources, which is why those pours land at the top of the calorie range.
