A yogurt maker has one job: hold milk at a steady incubation temperature long enough for the culture to set it. Everything else — jars vs. one container, timers, capacity — is really about convenience, not about making noticeably better yogurt.

What a yogurt maker actually does

Yogurt cultures need a narrow warm zone, typically 40–45°C (104–113°F), held steady for 6–12 hours. A yogurt maker is essentially a small, well-insulated warming box built to hold that range without you having to babysit it. That is the entire function, whether the unit costs ten dollars or a hundred.

Because the core job is so simple, the meaningful differences between models come down to capacity and format rather than the quality of the set itself.

Types of yogurt makers

Multi-jar makers hold several small glass jars that incubate side by side — good for individual portions and different flavors in one batch.
Single-container makers incubate one larger batch in one container — better for families or for batches you plan to strain into Greek yogurt.
Multi-cooker yogurt settings an Instant Pot or similar appliance with a built-in yogurt function does the same job without a dedicated machine.
DIY methods an oven with the light on, a heating pad wrapped around a jar, or an insulated cooler with warm water all hold the right range without buying anything.

What actually matters when choosing one

Steady temperature the single most important feature — look for reviews confirming consistent heat, not just a nice-looking display.
Batch size vs. household use buy for how much yogurt you actually eat weekly, not the biggest option available.
Easy cleanup glass jars and dishwasher-safe parts save time over models with awkward-to-clean inserts.
A built-in timer or auto shutoff convenient, but not essential — a kitchen timer does the same job.

Quick picks by need

Multi-jar best for individual portions and flavors
Single large container best for families and straining into Greek yogurt
Instant Pot / multi-cooker best if you already own one and want to skip a new appliance

Whatever you choose, size your starter with the yogurt starter calculator so the batch sets firm regardless of which machine holds the heat.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I actually need a yogurt maker?
No — yogurt only needs a steady 40–45°C (104–113°F) for several hours, which an oven with the light on, a heating pad, an Instant Pot with a yogurt setting, or a thermos can also provide. A dedicated yogurt maker is convenient and hands-off, but it is not the only way to get a good set.
What is the difference between jar-style and single-container yogurt makers?
Jar-style makers hold several small glass jars, each incubating separately, which is convenient for grab-and-go portions and letting people add their own flavors. Single-container makers hold one larger batch, better suited to families or anyone straining a big batch into Greek yogurt afterward.
Does a more expensive yogurt maker make better yogurt?
Not necessarily. The main job of any yogurt maker is holding a steady incubation temperature, and even inexpensive models do this reliably. Extra cost usually buys convenience features like a timer, larger capacity, or multiple jars rather than a meaningfully better set.
Can I use an Instant Pot instead of a yogurt maker?
Yes. Many multi-cookers, including Instant Pot models, have a dedicated yogurt setting that heats the milk and then holds it at incubation temperature, doing the same job as a standalone yogurt maker in one appliance.
What size yogurt maker should I get?
Match it to how much yogurt your household actually eats in a week. A 1-quart or multi-jar maker suits one or two people, while a half-gallon or larger single-container model makes more sense for families or anyone planning to strain batches into Greek yogurt.
How do I know if my yogurt maker is holding the right temperature?
Check a batch partway through incubation with an instant-read thermometer; it should read in the 40–45°C (104–113°F) range. If it runs consistently hotter or cooler, sets will be inconsistent regardless of how good the machine looks on paper.
